When you live out of town and away from the municipal water system, you need to figure out how you are going to get water into your house. Borehole
The first part of the process is to create a borehole. The well drilling company may use a rotary bit, which will dig down into the ground and make the hole. The way that the bit spins it carries the dirt out of the hole as it continues to eat down into the soil. An alternative to the rotary bit would be a punch, which would be like a giant cookie cutter that punches out the hole. The goal is to get the borehole down past the water table. The reason to go down past the water table is so that your well doesn't run dry.
Casing
When the well is completely drilled out, then the drilling company is going to put in a casing. The casing is basically a liner that is going to be the actual interior of the well. It is made out of steel piping or PVC. The casing helps to keep contaminants out of your water. It also gives your well extra support so that it doesn't collapse, which can be a risk, especially as the well goes deeper.
Grout
The well company will put grout down in between the casing and the dirt of the borehole. The grout helps keep the casing in place in the well and is another layer of protection against contamination getting into your wall. The more layers against contamination you have, the better off you are going to be.
